Searching for a new AV
« on: Nov 17th, 2003, 1:35pm »

 Hello  ,

I've been using  NAV  for  years  and  never had a problem since the 2002 version was released ( without the 2001/ POP3 issues) .
My  2003's license will expired on 2004 and  I am thinking about  using  another AV  by  two motives :a) Symantec's AV design does not  offer configuration options  to , say, more curious or advanced users and  b) No  problem with the new ativation à la M$ but  I  do not agree with  Symantec controlling how  many times I could format or install new hardware during my one year license.

  My  options  are :

1) Kaspersky  , which I'm not using because when I tried it in the past I installed the PRO version *full* and it was a real resource hog . I am sure that  a custom installation of the  KAV personal  version should solve that - KAV would be my first choice.

2) McAfee  , but  the two times I tried it ( the download trial version and a bought CD-box  version - gave to one of my nephews  ) both times I had serious freeze  problems . And  , now , there is a vendor's windown that imposes itself  with ads  about  others McAfee's products to its licensed users - I don't accept that kind of "spam" in a payed product   .

3) NOD32 , which I liked very much for its speed when I tried in the past but wouldn't use it for two reasons : a)  the several Vampirefo's testings I've read at DSL Security Forum on NOD32  and  b) a  non-critical  approach at  its  official forum at Wilders   - I do not like to participate in cults .

   Any  others  AVs  suggestions ?

    Regards  ,

I had the same "problem" not too long ago.

NAV - never had a problem with this AV, but it can't be properly configured

KAV - it rocks, but it proved to be a "resource hog" on my computer, so I couldn't use it. I do hope KAV 5.0 will be a bit less "resource-hungry"

McAfee - another good AV, but it gave me too many problems

NOD32 - maybe it's not as good as KAV and McAfee, but it gives you many options to configure it and it is very light on resources, too.
I couldn't think of any other good AV's, so I decided to give NOD32 a try. All in all, this AV has always achieved good results in many AV tests, so it can't be that bad.

Take a look at Dr. Web, very sensitive to false positives but also very sensative to new unknown detections.

To much money for average level of protection and to many independent modules running.

Buddel  ,  my first   problem with NOD32 is  all  the tests vampirefo  did - and I respect  vampirefo knowledge on malware .Besides , there is  that  "cult" aspect I said .
Jamming  ,  Dr.WEB  seems  to  much  based on heuristics and I prefer  a  signature based  AV .
I've  also considered   Sophos AV but it seems that its main target is the corporate client.

Well there are other versions being sold using the DR. Web engine, my understanding that it is not purely heuristics.

I  didn't  know  about  that , Jamming . Are  you  saying  others AVs  using  Dr.WEB's engine , like F-Secure uses the KAV one ?

No , it is not  purely  heuristic but it's  heavily heuristic I think .
Perhaps it could be a nice second AV running on demand ; heuristics as an optional check , a second opinion .

I also respect Vampirefo's knowledge, but at least according to many other tests, NOD32 is pretty good. I don't like this "cult" aspect either, but what am I supposed to do? NOD32 hasn't caused any problems on my computer so far, so I don't think it would be a good idea if I used another AV that I like less just because of this annoying aspect. I'm still pinning all my hopes on KAV 5.0. Maybe this will be my next AV. Who knows. Smiley

I discovered  a  very interesting and unique  feature  KAV  has .

Two different  and  optional kinds of  database  that you can download  when updating KAV : Extend and Paranoia Database Options .
I  understood  that  KAV's  users have  the normal daily update and also two more  "extensions" to include if he/she wants when updating .

You looked at Sophos? If virus tests are worth anything, SophosAV has ben a top-3 finisher since, well, about forever! Probably not the cheapest, but is at least a bit cheaper than Norman. And, AFAIK, they haven't shipped a virus in a def-file update yet... Grin

Ian  ,  when  you  said  " ...And, AFAIK, they haven't shipped a virus in a def-file update yet... "  it's  about  what  AV  vendor ,  if  you  don't mind ?

About  Sophos  , I  tought it was  targeted  at  corporate  customers . Am  I  wrong ?

Yup, KAV let one slip by about 9 months back. They corrected it very soon after, though.

Sophos - I think there's a personal version, but I haven't used it anywhere other than work at the moment.
