You might start with the fact that the correct plural is viruses.

    Hello  Claire and maxqnz ,

In the  book  " VIRUSES  REVEALED " ( by  Harley,Slade and Gattiker,Osborne/McGraw-Hill,California,USA,2001 ) in the  page 60, the authors have a box about this , say , etymological question .
Well , they use the plural "viruses" , but they agree that there are   experts also using  "virae",vira","viri",virii",viren" or "virides".

We  could  remember  Karl Popper  when he said , many and many times , that he wished to discuss and solve problems , not words .

  Regards ,
         mozar

My, my, my - do I detect our first 'almost-tiff'?

Tom Christiansen posts a long argument about one difficult-to-track Latin word - even his doc admits that the word 'virus' was a unique-case 2nd declension word. (((Make that his document, since I've no idea what his doctor admits - oh, yes I do - his doctor admits patients!!!Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Can you tell that school's out?)))

Will there ever be agreement? I'll answer that in the words of the scribe - "Sic transit gloria sanguinum fortinatum", which (loosely translated) means "you'll be bloody lucky if there is".

We know what we mean, even when we make it up. Bring on Senna the Soothsayer! (And thanks be to Frankie Howerd, without whom Latin lessons would have been incredibly tedious).

I WAS trying to have fun. Is everybody in this thread humour-impaired? I appended a smiley for the specific purpose of making it visibly obvious I was not criticising Claire. Apparently, that was missed by everybody.
Maybe next time I will try something a little less discreet, like IT WAS ONLY A JOKE FOR CRYING OUT LOUD! With any luck, such a notice should alert you all to my atempts at simple good-natured jibing.

Sorry maxqnz,
But it would seem to me that the intended humor was overwhelmed by your choice of words.
Who knows, maybe I came down with the "Big Brother Syndrome".

What is happening, I leave you guys alone for a few days and you get into a "tiff". (like that word, Ian)  Actually, I understand that you were joking, and it is understandable that someone who is not native wouldn't understand that Maxqnz and think your being mean.  So since it has all blown over, I just wanted to pass along something that someone said to me once.

To be clear this is not Ignorance as in stupidity, it is Ignorance as in not knowing.  So don't get upset at me Maxqnz, it means that you didn't know you might upset someone.  So everyone play nice when I am not here or I will have to give Magnus the patented "Big Stick", since he speaks softly. Pax, dudes...

Fun is all I took from it too, but your link was excellent reading, maxqnz - especially since I've 'Virii-ed' in the past... Mind you, some of those alternatives that Mozar drew our attention to where a little odd - 'viren' I can follow, but 'virides' made me scratch my head - I'm not the best Latin scholar there's ever been, I'll grant you!

Lurkio still made it more understandable, though... Grin

No offence taken, Jamming. FWIW, I wasn't offended by the reactions of others, just surprised. I knew that English is not claire's first language, but thought that others for whom it is would have got the joke. Since nobody did, I shall spell it out. Claire asked "do you want to know more about virii?" My response was ironic, suggesting that (if you do), "you could start with the fact that the correct plural is viruses." I am rather fond of irony, and to claire, I apologise for giving you the impression that I was criticising you. To the others here for whom English IS their first language but who still missed the joke, I pledge not to inflict my humour on you again, since it so completely escaped you.

Heh! - that's just that 'weird' US spelling again... Look, at least I only swapped DisneyLand and Walt Disney World over, but 'i's and 'e's... sheesh! I mean - anyone can up sticks and shift 1,000 acres of swamp without too many people noticing Smiley Wink Cheesy Grin
