Two encryption tools

  Hello  ,

For  those  few  that never have been curious about cryptography here are two extremes examples of those apps , the complex and rich "PGP" and the basic and functional "File2File" , both freeware.

    "PGP6.5.8cktbuild08"

The Imad's build of this traditional program is compatible
with XP ( just do not install its "Outlook Express " plug-in  , read the manual/help and go to Forums).

      www.ipgpp.com

    And  the   " File2File " program .Extremely user-friendly
encrypting files and directories or creating exe.files ( e-mails) . It does even automatically delete the original after the encryption is done .You only need   to be creative about your password  and read about 3 pages of instructions.

  www.cryptomathic.com

To know a little more about cryptography just follow the links at the Imad's Page above mentioned  .

  Regards  ,
       mozar

Hi Mozar - why does it seem that even amongst the 'security conscious', there are very few of us who use PGP?

Also - I've been running the Outlook Express plugin without any problems.  The author of PGP6.5.8cktbuild08 (Imad as you mention) believes it is stable.......  I've only used it very little to encrypt (see question above!), but it's certainly not made OE crash or anything.

 Hello  bubs ,

You would not believe all the work I have trying to convince people that  encryption  sometimes is really necessary and , at least , may be fun to learn.
I have had problems with Outlook Express 5.5 or 6 and PGP's plugin, so I preffer  just to encrypt  using the toolbar window.
Wish  Imad  continues his work  with PGP and I have time one day to learn more about encryption .

       Regards ,
                       mozar

P.S. : Why mozar did not PGP signs ? Well, bubs , at the moment I have to confess that I am with 3 others encryption tools installed (testing) and I have uninstalled my PGP for some days --- too much encryption on-demand options working with my right-click mouse .Anyway I use cryptography basically to encrypt files .Outside the , say , security concerned people , encryption is too much cloak&dagger .

A good question. I too use Imad's PGP build, and love it. Unfortunately, I
can't get my friends interested in it. However, I use the PGPdisk to keep
all my private data on an encrypted virtual disk, that I unmount when
online, so that anybody who makes it past my firewall s/w is not going to
find anything interesting. Even my email client resides on the PGPdisk, so
I go online with it open to check my mail, then unmount the virtual disk,
and surf safe in the knowledge that anybody outside the NSA won't be able
to see my private data.

Hi maxqnz

Good idea!  I keep snoopers out of my data with Tiny Trojan Trap,
configured so that no app which can talk to the internet can read my data
drive.

I think PGP's time will come as people realise how 'unprivate' email is.

Have you tried GPG? - I'm playing with it on the basis that if I need to
encrypt for commercial purposes, I'd need GPG rather than PGP in order to
be legal.  I've imported my keys OK, but am having trouble getting it to
trust my own ID(!!) Huh

No, I haven't tried GPG yet. I am keeping half an eye on its progress, but since I won't be using PGP for commercial use, I  don't need to switch just yet. Of course, when I finally become a penguin, I'll have to switch.  Cheesy

What  is  your  OS ? I am  asking  this  because  mine  is  XP Home Ed. / NTFS and  I have read about some problems with XP and/or  NTFS  when PGPdisk is used .Don't know if it is better to reinstall  my ckt buid 08 now or wait for the release of  the  new ckt build09 ( still beta 3 ) .

By coincidence the answer to my question popped up on the yahoo
PGP forum daily digest, so I'm happy now Cheesy - like all these
things, its quite simple once the penny has dropped Huh

GPG's only feature which (so far) i find really boorrriinnngg is
that when you type your passphrase in response to what looks
very much like a DOS prompt, you CANNOT see you typing.  Time to
invent a shorter passphrase!

There are (several) disadvantages to going Antarctic (har har).
One is the way that anything Linux sems to be under-documented,
another is that you'll have to climb up a whole new learning
curve of product controversies. Angry

Hi Mozar.

I tried an experiment with ckt08 and NTFS on Win2k - no problems at all.  I can think of no reason why XP should make it burp.  If you're thinking of the recent thread on DSLR, I'm sure the idea that XP/NTFS/PGP disk are incompatible was mistaken.

 Hi  bubs  ,

Yes  , it  was  this  thread indeed (with that mistake about not using Home Edition with NTFS ---I  change FAT32 to NTFS  since the OS  instalation. If you  are using PGPdisk with W. 2K  I think it is safe if I use with XP--- everything , until now , compatible with  2000 works with my XP.
So ,no advantage to wait for the 09build , isn't it ?

I've installed XP (Pro) for a colleague, and then observed him using it at close quarters, and as far as I can see, there are no fundamental OS level differences with 2K.  The changes are all several layers higher than that.

Just as a 32 bit app which works ok on NT4 will work fine on w2k, then stg which is OK on w2k will be fine on XP.

As to the XP home / XP pro thing, as far as I can see, XP Home is the same as Pro, LESS the bits which are needed for domain networking.

As to the advantages of the 09 build, I've not yet got my head around Imad's strategic goal, and the steps he is taking with each build.  I'm one of these lazy so-and-so's who often prefers to stay one stable version behind Grin

When I have got to grips with 'where is Imad going with this?' I suspect I'll gallop in amongst the beta brigade!!

Hey mozar!

Was looking at imad's site last night, and according to the 'read me' for the 09beta3 build, there WAS an issue with PGPdisk and XP in the 08 build which he's now fixed.

Based on what i said further up this thread, I'd better shut up & crawl away quietly! Embarassed

 Hello , bubs

It seems there is really an issue , at least with W. XP .Take a look at this yesterday post  at  Becky's below :

 http://www.morelerbe.com/cgi-bin/ubb-cgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f= 4;t=000213;p=

Thank  you  for remembering the question  and we will see if  ckt build 09(post-beta 3 version) will solve this .

 Regards ,
