"WormHunter"??

Hi,
I am so pleased with Trojan Hunter that I bought the license
a few days ago an do not regret it.
Do you know if in a not too far future Magnus plans to
make a "WormHunter" software with the MagnusTh quality label?I do think that a lot of people(including myself) would like to have it.
So Magnus could you tell us about the possible future
softwares you are thinking of besidesTH2.6 of course
Regards Cool Grin

I think it would be great as well. I can't answer for Magnus, however his only comment on the subject I can find appears in this thread: http://www.misec.net/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=TrojanHunter&action =display

Shame the link got munged!

Look for the thread by Balzac in

Apologies if that one gets crunched too!

Mind you, how could WormHunter determine the difference between legitimate VBA scripts and nasty ones? It would need some fairly intelligent code analysis, rather than simple signature stuff (taking longer in the process), especially if heuristics came into it.

 Hello  future "WormHunter" users ,

Before I know Magnus and TH  I have asked the programmer  of  another  AT  about  something to detect Worms .I remember that he asked that worms  were a so different complex world that he would not even think about it in the remote future.
He  is a very good  programmer  I respect him and his product ( I use it to back-up TH) .As Magnus is also a very good programmer and a FAST one ... who knows .Of course I do not have any inside information , but this subject (worms) , this product demand (wormhunter) and all those views about the subject here  shows  a concrete demand , isn't it.

I think I realize some of the difficulties in writing a WormHunter but if it is possible I think that Magnus can do so.  However if it means sacrificing too much time to TrojanHunter I hope he waits.  WormHunter would have to be more heuristically oriented twords the computer's activity and behavior.  This in turn could strenghten Magnus abilities to check for trojan behaviors in TH.  I will not try to influence Magnus' decision on this but leave it to his understanding of his abilities and the difficulty involved.

Before  the release of  " WormHunter-Beta ", we will be  speculating about  the "VirusHunter ".       And, just after the first download of virus definitions update  , "HunterSuite 1.0" will appear  with the 3 programs in one .

The Day of HunterSuite 1.0 will be a great day and that will be the day I no longer will use NAV.

    Hello  Jamming  ,

You  have to agree  that  the NAV 2002 version is much  better  than 2001 --- the POP3 problems is finished .For the first time using NAV I have not to reinstall the program (until now) .
Of course  one day we will have a much superior support and  stability with "VirusHunter" . But I think that , until the future release of VH , I will stay with NAV.

Just kinda curious folks. How do you envisage the yet to be developed WormHunter (good thing you're a workaholic Magnus) to be significantly different from Wormguard currently available? If you're not familiar with it, see here: http://wormguard.diamondcs.com.au/. Specifically, if you were to make a wish list for WormHunter, what additional functions would you see WormHunter undertaking, or how would you see it performing the same functions differently? Just FYI, I personally purchased Trojan Hunter to supplement another AT, not because it performed any incremental functions, but because it performed a very essential function differently.

On area I think that could be different IMHO is the interface which I find terrible on Wormguard. I find it difficult to use and would prefer the slicker look and feel that we have with TH.

And  :  a)  Magnus' support   ; b) no false positives ; c) XP compatibility before M$ no more support this OS ;d) and , in my case , a great sympathy for Mischel Internet Security organizational culture ( values , focus etc) .
I would dare to say that  I have more restrictions against some vendors  than  an occasional cracker.

Thanks for your comments gentlemen.

Now, with your patience and indulgence, let me bounce a few thoughts off you. IMHO, computer users do not really need another AV or Wormguard-type program at this point in time. I'm reasonably certain that our friend Magnus could write an AV that we would all find significantly better than the best AV out there right now. I'm equally confident that he could develop WormHunter, and we would all find it much superior to Wormguard. You would get what you want acheton, and so would you mozar, and the mouse would have another hole. But, would this man's time, energy and superlative programming skills be best utilized in doing this? More selfishly, would our own interests be best served by his doing this? I think not.

If we as satisfied, paying customers are going to take it upon ourselves to encourage Magnus to pursue a particular development project, then let's go for the gold fellow TH users. IMHO, both Magnus' best interests and ours would be better served if he undertook the development of a program which provided comprehensive sandbox protection. Yes, I know that it represents a much more ambitious project, but wouldn't it be great? The latest and best in sandboxing technology from Mischel Internet Security!

Well said, BB - a product with the added bonus of not looking like it was an attempt to deliberately rip off another by being too closely related in function and scope.

From what I can gather, there are many ideas floating around in the Mischel Internet Security ether. Some have been taken beyond the discussion stage and may be waiting for a suitable vehicle or package to carry it further.

I believe your suggestion can be useful - the catalyst, perhaps. I'm sure Magnus would give serious thought to anything that sounded interesting and/or a challenge.

As for time - there's never enough of that for any of us Smiley

   Big_Bob ,

Your  suggestion  is  the  boldest one in this thread . I have been watching  a kind of  rebirth of the sandbox concept --- with the new version of TTT and reading Conejo's experiences .

In the very beggining of TTT I tried it and it was terrible . My computer crashed ,conflicts with everything, the  machine slowdown  and I finished uninstalling it.A month ago I have tried the current version of "SurfinGuard-Beta " . Everything ok , but it only really covered Internet Explorer 6  and strangely not "Outlook Express 6" --- uninstalled it also .
Big_Bob ,  I can not find a reason for using sandboxes if my FW has outgoing protection , my AV and AT are reliable  and I can use also a worm detector . And FWs, AVs and ATs are less restrictive than SBs , aren't they ?
This is just my opinion and I really did not think seriously about SBs. But , besides that , I just can't imagine a good name to this product --- "SandHunter" or "BoxHunter" would be really  ambiguous .

      Regards ,
     mozar
