The XP firewall can be made to work alongside many of the current commercial ones. For example, ZoneAlarm would let IIS connections in or out, but I'd prefer to limit this to just port 80. Now, with the paid-for versions of ZA, a rule can be written, but for the cheapskates out there it's possible to combine ZAF for outbound application control and the XP firewall for incoming IIS connections. Dire warnings are given to anyone trying to run the XP firewall with anything, but I say give it a go - nothing will break.

Not sure how this new application control added by Sphinx will interact with ZA et al. I'll try it soon.

AFAIK, there are no conflicts between ZA and the XP firewall, I ran them together for longtime without probs.  Now I run ZA Pro 5.5 and NAV 2005 Worm Blocking together, again without conflict or problems.  And as you say, one can catch what the other misses sometimes.  Wink

Agreed - sometimes I wonder if all the warnings about severe incompatibility with multiple software firewalls are just a bit over-blown. It might be tricky to sort out the interaction, and the method of hooking into the OS may be identical which I suppose would lead to squabbles about which one goes first, but it's easier than most people imagine. I used to run ZAF and Sygate alongside each other without any problems at all. Mozar has reported that 8Signs and the XP wall work fine together. I wonder if there's any mileage in pulling a list of 'compatibles'? The only reason I can see that so many sw firewalls disable the XP one is that it avoids a load of tech support problems when trying to work out which product is blocking whatever application.

And  BlackIce Protection  - installed  without  its  apps  filtering  and   with  the  FW/IDS component -  also  runs  fine  with  8Signs  .
I've  tested  it  with  8Signs   for  two  or  three  weeks  without  a  single  issue  last  year    and  , when  I  talked  about  this  combo  with  James Grant , he  saw  no  problem .
Even  so  ,  I  think  that  I'm  a  single  FW   type  of  user ,  but  this  is  just  a  matter  of  personal  choice  .
