 Hello  ,

I  am  testing ,  just  now  ,   this  free  Smiley FW   from  MS  and  it  was  a  nice  surprise .

If  you  want  to  use  an  absolute  set&forget  FW  ,  without  application  filtering  ,  very  resources friendly  but   very  poor   concerning  rules' edition  and  that  will  pass  "stealthed"  at  any  Sygate , PcFlank  and GRC  tests   ,  this  is  one  of  the strongest  options .

  Regards  ,

Would you then back it up with 8Signs, for the rules-based stuff and out-bound protection? Just curious if they work well together, because (as you know) I'm not scared of running two FWs Grin Wink

Randy  ,  I  still  miss  ZA PLUS 4.5  . It  was  the  FW  I've   always suggested  to  eveyone  here   that  don't  have  any  interest  in  learning  about  rules . Sometimes  ,  worse  than  crackers ,  are  the  marketing  guys .

Ian  ,  I've  disabled  my  8Signs temporarily during  this  test  time  -  as  you  know  ,  I'm  scared  running  two  FWs  Smiley .
I'll  ask  Linda  about  this  combo  and  I'll  post  back .

The Windows firewall usually can get along with 3rd-party firewalls running at the same time; however, by default Norton or ZA will when installed, turnoff the Windows firewall; and the Security Center has a "warning" against running two firewalls simultaneously but it won't stop you from doing that if you wish to do so.  In the past I did run ZA and Windows ICF at same time.  With the advent of SP2, it is no longer called the "ICF", it's called simply, "Windows firewall".  But it usually can coexist with 3rd-party firewalls.  Wink

  Uninstalled  SP-2 FW  and  I'm  back  to  8Signs  .

Ian  ,  I  don't  know  if  there  is  any  real  advantage  associating  8Signs FW  with  SP-2 FW . Both FWS  have   no  application  filtering  but  8Signs  is  certainly  much  more  configurable  and  includes  a  " true " - like  Phant0m likes  to  classify  -  SPI  plus  some  other  features  like  " Tarpits "  , " Web Server Protection "  etc  ,  and  the  finest , imo , rules-editor .

But  you could  play  safely  with  8Signs  and  BlackIce Protection's  IDS  component  ( custom installation  without  its  apps  control ). This combo   is  the  lasy  man   IDS  solution Smiley .

obs : 8Signs  uses  around  5Mb  of  your  RAM  and  SP-2  around  3.5Mb . BIP  uses  more  or  less  8Mb  ,  custom installed .

P.S. :  Just  received  this  e-mail  from Linda Cleminshaw (8Signs.com )  concerning  Ian's  question :

" ...I tested 8Signs with the XP Firewall last night and did not encounter any
compatibility problems, they appear to work fine together from what I've
seen. ...  "
