Free Firewalls.....

Hey....I'm currently disappointed using Mcafee's firewall plus, so I'm looking to try a free FW (if something better is available). From what I've heard the 3 best are:

1) Kerio Personal
2) Sygate Personal
3) Zonealarm

What I need:

1) A powerful firewall with advanced options (create custom rules, etc.).
2) A FW that uses very few resources (Currently have 384MB RAM and Mcafee is a memory hog).

I haven't used any of the firewalls listed above so I hope somebody here can help me. Suggestions??

Thanks

 Hello  ,  Untouchable J

  You  said :

"  1) A powerful firewall with advanced options (create custom rules, etc.).

2) A FW that uses very few resources (Currently have 384MB RAM and Mcafee is a memory hog).   ... "

I  think  that  Kerio  2.15  would  be  the ideal  FW  for  you .

Here  is  the  Kerio/Broadband's  Forum    ( and  also  the link  to  download  it ) :

http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/kerio

After  some  readings  , I would  suggested  you  to  take  a look  at   BlitzenZeus  Rules-set  :

Thanks for the reply mozar....

I was checking out Keiro's official website and was comparing their FW to others....I was impressed. However how come most users are suggesting Kerio v. 2 instead of version 4? I'm guessing version 2 is just as powerful as 4, but uses less memory..correct?

Yes  ,  less  resources  usage   and  less bugs . But  remember  that you  can  test  both  version  to decide  for  yourself  .
2.15  is   a  freeware  and  4.x  is  also  free  but without  some  secondary  components  deactivated after  the  30  days  trial , if  you  decide  not purchase  it .

IMO  , the  important  think  to  do  is  to  read  all FAQs  and  threads  about   rules-editing  when  we you  start  to play with   firewall's  rules .

Here  is  a   very  informative   sticky  thread about  FWs  ,  by CrazyM   at  WILDERS Forums  :

http://www.wilderssecurity.com/showthread.php?t=24415

I'm  waiting  for  your  posts  about  your  expwriences  with  rules-based  FWs .

Thanks for the link...when I have some free time I'll read through the information.

I looked at the comparison charts between the free and paid versions of Zonealarm, Sygate, and Kerio. From what I can tell Zonealarm(free) dosent give you the ability to create custom rules, Sygate have a lot of key features missing and limits your rules to 20, but Kerio seems to have all the important features available in their free version (really dont need the privacy options):

http://www.kerio.com/kpf_comparison_version.html

One feature I really dont understand is "Runs as Internet Gateway". Could you please shed some light what this option is...and if it's critical to have?

Also I've read high praise for Zonealarm and Sygate...but none for Kerio. Is this firewall really at the same level with the other two?...or more vulnerable compared to the other two??

Thanks for the information....

I  would  say  that  if  you  don't  use  a  router  or  a  LAN  you  don't  have  to  think  about  the "internet gateway " feature at  the   moment ( I never used  it  when I played  with Kerio 2.15 ).
I  would  say  also  that  ,  if  you  want  to  use  correctly  a  rules-based  FW  like  Kerio  , you  will  need  to  have  time  to  read  about   :

http://www.broadbandreports.com/nsearch?boardlist=145&cat=remark& ;advanced=1&145=1&p=10&o=r&q=gateway

Above  is  just  an  example  about  searching  the "Internet Gateway"  topic   at  Kerio's  Forum  Smiley .

Untouchable J  ,  I'm  saying  that   not  because  I'm  that  lazy  , but  because  I  think  that  a  FW  like   Kerio  needs  some  reading/time  to  be  fully  used .

Regarding    ZA  , Sygate  and  Kerio 2.15  ,  you  can  trust  Kerio  ,  believe  me  .
Why  would  so  many  FW  power-users   still  run  v 2.15  if  they  have  so  many  other FW  options ?

   Regards  ,

   mozar
