In the SANS report found at this URL:
http://www.sans.org/top20/index.php#ports

I'm wondering which ports a normal home user with a cable modem should block and not have to worry about system services being interfered with.  It looks to me like shutting several of these ports will stop activities that many a normal user does...such as download ftp files from update sites, use AOL, etc.  Windows XP Home user here.  Fully understand that trial and error is a technique available.

I  think  that  after  a  basic  rule-set  is created only  the  trial and error  approach  should  work  with  less used  ports .
With  8Signs   I  have  the  option  to  look  at  the  LOG  and  see  what  and  why  is  blocked ; and  with a right-click on that specific log entry 8Signs givews me the option of  crete a singular rule for that case - which I  fine tunned  after . A  very  user-friendly  feature that one , and it also includes  some others  right-click options concerning the specific entry ( why doesn't mach rule X & what is the closest rule to this entry ).
