Best have a firewall poll then?

I thought that a good start to the new board is to find out who uses which firewall. I am almost certain that I have missed out a couple of *really* obvious firewalls from the list of choices, but here goes anyway Wink

I guess I had best declare my interests. as some know I use Outpost Pro as my firewall of choice, having tried many others. I chose OP because it is a good balance between the things I wanted in a firewall. It isn't so simple to be unconfigurable, it is rule based, it works well with VPN, the interface is nice to work with and it is stable. It also provides me with additional features which I find valuable, including cookie filtering, ad blocking and a DNS cache. Anyway that's my tuppence.

 I   voted   " 8Signs " .

 But , against  cookies , adds , spyware and WEB's junk   I use a blend of SpyStopper ,Ad-Aware , SpyBot , SPYAD .
And against virus I use NAV2003 and  for trojans I use TH 3.7 .
My  FW  is  used against  inbounds , i.e. , probes , attacks  from the script kiddies and the bad guys .

Isn't  this   the  historical FW  role ? Cheesy

And for the real paranoids there are the Phantom's rules Grin

Apparently Claire you don’t know the difference between paranoia and common sense or caution. Fact; my Rule-set contains numerous rules to block malicious or just plain unwanted and unnecessary packets that EnhancedRulesSet.rls does not, and if you taking the time to learn more than just Installing & using Default rule-sets you could possibly know this is true too. Just because EnhancedRulesSet.rls passes these On-line webscans doesn’t verify the rule-set is half as good as it appears.

For instance a lot of today’s Software Firewall provides “Block Incoming Connections” Feature which blocks TCP packets with SYN Flag set, this alone will pass majority of Online webscans unless user makes improper modifications and/or have Hosting rules to authorize initiating Connections from the remote Machines.

By Default of my Rule-set you have no Outgoing Connection restrictions over TCP, if you want to switch into Paranoid Rule-set then you disable the Master TCP rule to Authorize and create rules per IP&Port and Application…

Phantom, hey your welcome to register and it would prevent people from impersonating you too. I understand your point on rulesets and it is a very on the mark. However, please understand that the majority of users want to see results, whether they are technically correct or not.

This is something that we have dealt with here at this forum about market expectations with number of definitions and detection of things other than Trojan servers.  Sometimes market expectations are the based upon perception other than actual facts, the best you can do is educate and explain but please never appear condescending. That may not of been your intent, but it was the impression I was left with.

I say this not as someone who wishes you anything but success in your venture with your firewall as there is a larger enough market out there for many good firewalls such as yours.

Hello  and  welcome  Phant0m . A  FW  place  without  your  presence is not complete .

Claire , if you don't mind  I  will try  to translate your "paranoid " expression , ok.

I  think  you    use  that  word  in  the most positive way , meaning  a  very  rich and restrictive defensive rule-set - but designed for advanced users only.

  And  ,  Phant0m , you  understood  it  as  a  kind  of  rule-set overkill , almost  a  connection  killer .

I've tested  the  Enhanced and  Phant0m  rules-sets when I used LnS and  I  can  assure  both rule-sets  worked fine all time.
The  difference  is  that  Phant0m did create a  set  of   rules that  some wannabe  black-hats will never understand  fully - which is very good for us , users .So  , to understand it in depth you have to understand FW  really . But  that  is  not a necessary condition to install and  use it , certainly.
And lots of non-experts LnS users installed it and  are using it  now .
There is no  need  indeed  to  be  a  power user to install and run LnS  with Phant0m's rule-set applied - very easy with all his  site's  screenshots and texts .

I  sincerely  wish  that I have cleaned the noise between the communication among  two virtual friends of mine - and , with my English , this is not  an  easy  task .

   Regards  ,

Have no fear, claire, I understood what you meant by "paranoid." In computer security, it's a compliment, not a pejorative. BTW,  "curat" should have  only one "r".   Grin Grin
