This information post is provided so that users can obtain guidance on what the recommended settings are for various system services. System services for XP Home Edition, XP Pro and Vista can be viewed and modified via: START>RUN and type in: services.msc What are the benefits of modifying Windows default settings for system services? 1. System performance can be improved by disabling or not starting unnecessary services. 2. System security will be improved through disabling unneeded services, some of which are used by the cybercrooks to compromise user systems. 3. Usable memory will be increased when unnecessary services are disabled. The following links provided recommendations for the system services settings for Windows XP. http://www.beemerworld.com/tips/servicesxp.htm http://cybercoyote.org/security/services.shtml http://cybercoyote.org/security/serv-comp.htm http://www.blackviper.com/ The following links provided recommendations for the system services settings for Windows Vista. http://www.blackviper.com/WinVista/servicecfg.htm NOTE: 1. Before changing the settings on system services, the user should copy down the current settings for future reference in the event a settings change causes problems on the user system. 2. Settings for system services are dependent on a user's hardware and software configuration. Disabling a specific service may result in a third party program malfunction or error messages to occur concerning hardware. It is recommended that users who decided to modify system services do so with caution. This note is not intended to discourage changing system services settings; it is intended to encourage users to check their systems and to be aware that a "recommended" setting may not be feasible for the user's system. Applies to all versions of TrojanHunter.
