Add the Security tab in Windows XP Home Edition

This procedure describes how to add the Security Configuration Manager (Security tab) into Windows XP Home Edition.
Once the Security Configuration Manager is installed, user accounts having full administrative privileges can modify the security privileges of any file and/or folder for all user accounts on the system. Limited user accounts are not able to change the security privileges. (Please read NOTES below.)
Windows XP Pro and Windows 2000 already have the Security Configuration Manager installed.
Preparation for installing the Security tab
1. Log on to the system with a user account that has FULL ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES.
2. Manually create a System Restore Point using START-HELP and SUPPORT. Name this Restore Point BeforeSecurityTabInstall.
3. Using Windows Explorer, create a new folder on the hard drive and name it SecurityTabInstall. This folder will be used to store the downloaded setup file for installing the Security tab. Once the installation is completed, this folder can be removed if desired.)
4. Download the Security tab setup file from the following web site.
- ftp://ftp.dataforce.net/pub/support/WinNT4/Secure/scesp4i.exe
4a. Save scesp4i.exe to folder SecurityTabInstall.
5. Open folder SecurityTabInstall and locate file scesp4i.exe.
6. Double click on file scesp4i.exe and extract it to the same folder SecurityTabInstall.
Note that nothing as yet has been installed or modified on Windows XP Home Edition.
7. Disable any installed security program feature(s) that could block registry changes or program modifications to Windows XP (such as security programs ProcessGuard, RegDefend, and AppDefend).
8. Disable the resident anti-virus program.
9. Close down all programs in the lower right systray, exclusive of any software firewall.
10. Close all open windows.
Install the Security Tab
1. Using START-SEARCH-FOR Files or folders, navigate to folder SecurityTabInstall. Locate the file named setup.inf in folder SecurityTabInstall.
2. Right click on setup.inf and click on Install on the drop down menu. The installation of the Security tab will begin.
3. After the installation is complete, shutdown and reboot the computer. (Note that the installer may not issue a "Complete" message. Wait approximately 2 minutes for the installation to complete.
4. Log on with a user account having FULL ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES.
5. Re-enable the resident anti-virus program and any previously disabled features in other security programs.
Test the Installation
1. After the system reboot is completed, right-click on any file or folder on the hard drive. Select Properties from the menu.
2. The Program Files Properties window should now have a new tab named Security
NOTES:
1. For Limited User Accounts, the change of a file or folder's security privilege(s) applies to ALL Limited User Accounts.
2. Only user accounts that have FULL ADMINISTRATIVE PRIVILEGES can modify security privileges through the Security tab.
