Detailed Procedure to Uninstall TrojanHunter
« on: Jan 23rd, 2006, 7:53am »

This procedure describes how to properly uninstall TrojanHunter.  The detail of this procedure is provided to assist users who have encountered a problem because of multiple copies of TrojanHunter on their system.

A simplied procedure for uninstalling TrojanHunter is located here:  http://forum.misec.net/board/FAQ/1143355865

Some parts of this procedure are shown for Windows XP (Home and Pro) and Vista.  Older OS systems may require different steps.

TrojanHunter does a great job of removing all registry and file elements if the user follows proper uninstall procedures. Users following the procedure defined herein should experience a satisfactory uninstall of TrojanHunter.

To Uninstall TrojanHunter

Save the License.tlf file

1.  Save the License.tlf file to a secure location.

-  This is the licensing confirmation file and is required to be in the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter X.x folder.
-  Use Windows Explorer to copy/paste the License.tlf from the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter X.x folder to a floppy disk, CD, Zip disk, etc., or a secure folder elsewhere on the system disk.
-  The user should keep License.tlf securely stored for future use.

Shut down TrojanHunter Guard

2.  Open TrojanHunter Guard to the Settings window.
3.  Uncheck all the options of TrojanHunter Guard.
4.  Click on Ok to save the settings and close the Settings window.
5.  Reboot the computer to clear memory of all elements of TrojanHunter Guard.

-  The TrojanHunter Guard icon should NOT be present in the Systray.

-  It is very important that TrojanHunter Guard NOT be running at the time the Uninstall procedure is initiated.

-  The reboot assures that all elements of TrojanHunter are cleared from memory.

Prevent other Security Program interference

6.  Disable appropriate options in any other security program that is designed to block registry and/or file changes. Examples:  Ad-Watch (unlock Startup Registry lock option), RegDefend, etc.

Uninstall TrojanHunter

7.  Go to START>SETTINGS>CONTROL PANEL>ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS.  (In Vista, this is PROGRAMS AND FEATURES.)
8.  From the list of programs in the Add/Remove Program utility, select TrojanHunter and click on Remove or Uninstall..
9.  When requested, confirm the removal of TrojanHunter.

After the uninstaller completes, TrojanHunter and its key elements should no longer exist on the system.

Delete the TrojanHunter X.x folder

10.  Using Windows Explorer, navigate to the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter X.x folder.
11.  Right click on the TrojanHunter X.x and select Delete to remove this folder.  Confirm the deletion when requested.
12.  Close Windows Explorer.

Additional checks

13.  Check the START-PROGRAMS list of programs.  If the TrojanHunter folder exists, right click on it and select Delete to remove it.  Confirm the deletion when requested.

14.  Check the list of Startup programs and ensure that no entries for TrojanHunter Guard (THGuard.exe) are present.

14a.  START-RUN and type in:   msconfig
14b.  Click on Ok in the RUN window
14c.  Select the Startup tab on the msconfig window.
14d.  Scan the list of Startup programs and ensure there are no startup entries for TrojanHunter Guard (THGuard.exe).
14e.  Click on Cancel to close the msconfig window.

15.  Open the system Task Scheduler and remove any scheduled tasks that are TrojanHunter LiveUpdate or TrojanHunter Scanner.

Return other security programs to Normal State

NOTES:

A.  Novice users should exercise caution when using msconfig and not change any options without full knowledge of what the option change does.

B.  If THGuard.exe is found in the list of Startup programs, it should be removed using a utility program that safely removes unwanted entries in the Startup list.

C.  If more than one TrojanHunter folder is found under C:\Program Files, it is Safe and desireable to remove these folders.

D.  It is ALWAYS good practice to manually create a System Restore point prior to uninstalling or installing a program.

E.  Advanced users may/will have developed shortcuts to this Uninstall procedure.

This applies to all versions of TrojanHunter.
