Procedure to Install TrojanHunter

This procedure is an example of how to safely install TrojanHunter.
TrojanHunter consists of four primary components-
TrojanHunter Scanner (TrojanHunter.exe)- Permits the user to scan files stored on system drives; scan the system RAM memory; scan the system registry; scan the system ports
TrojanHunter Guard (THGuard.exe)- Provides real-time memory resident protection against malicious elements as defined through definitions and rulesets.
LiveUpdate (LiveUpdate.exe)- Provides scheduled or manually initiated updating of the definitions and rulesets for TrojanHunter Scanner and TrojanHunter Guard. LiveUpdate is only available for licensed users.
Scheduled Scanner (thcl.exe)- Performs a full system scan if the user has specified Scheduled Scanning through the options of TrojanHunter Scanner.
Recommended preparation for installation-
1. Download the latest version of TrojanHunter for installation. Save it either on the Desktop or other location where it is readily accessible for installation.
2. Have readily available the TrojanHunter license file named License.tlf (for licensed versions only). See NOTES 3 and 4 at the bottom of this procedure.
3. Manually create a System Restore point.
4. Uninstall any previous version of TrojanHunter as per the recommended uninstall procedure.

5. Deactivate any options in other security programs that could block registry changes, file additions / deletions / modifications.
6. Deactivate resident anti-virus scanner.
7. Shut down other running programs (icons located in the Systray and any open windows). It is not recommended to deactivate or shutdown the resident software firewall.
Installation Procedure-
1. START>RUN>BROWSE and navigate to the TrojanHunter setup file. This file is named TrojanHunterSetup.exe. Double click on the setup file to load it into the RUN window.
2. Click Ok on the RUN window to start the TrojanHunter installation wizard
3. Read the EULA and accept if in agreement.
4. Confirm the default installation folder for TrojanHunter or modify as desired.
5. When the installation wizard reaches the Finish window, uncheck the options to start up THGuard and TH scanner.
6. Click Finish to end the installation wizard.
Install License
7. Follow the License installation instructions in the email containing the License.tlf attachment. Or manually move the saved License.tlf file into the C:\Program Files\TrojanHunter 5.0 (or later) folder.
Set up TrojanHunter Guard
8. START>RUN>PROGRAMS>TROJANHUNTER folder.
9. Activate TrojanHunter Guard. Its icon will appear in the Systray (red handled spyglass on blue page).
10. Right click on the THGuard icon and selecting Settings from the menu.
11. Select the desired options for THGuard. All options are recommended.
12. Click Ok to Save the options and close the window.
13. Reboot the computer.
After Reboot
14. Set options back to normal in other security programs as needed.
15. Ensure that the resident anti-virus scanner is active.
16. Right click on the THGuard icon in the Systray and verify that the desired options for THGuard are correct. Click Ok to close the window.
Download the latest Definitions using LiveUpdate (Licensed version only). User's of the Trial version, please see Note 1 below.
17. Sign on the ISP if necessary.
18. Right click on the THGuard icon in the Systray and select LiveUpate to open the LiveUpdate window.
19. Uncheck "Pick random site"
20. Select the closest server in the "download site" window.
21. If necessary, set up the proxy parameters.
22. Click on Next to begin the LiveUpdate
23. The LiveUpdate will download the most current definitions. They will be automatically invoked for THGuard and TrojanHunter Scanner.
Set up TrojanHunter Scanner
24. START>PROGRAMS>TROJANHUNTER folder
25. Open TrojanHunter Scanner
26. Select the Options icon from the left icon bar of the main window of TrojanHunter Scanner.
27. Checkmark the desired options. All options are recommended initially.
- The user may wish to uncheck some of the logging options at a later time.
- The selected options will be remembered for subsequent uses of TrojanHunter Scanner.
28. Select the Scan icon from the left icon bar of the main window of TrojanHunter Scanner.
29. Checkmark only the disks that are desired for being scanned during a Full Scan. This will vary per user.
- The selected disks/folders will be remembered for subsequent uses of TrojanHunter Scanner.
30. Select the Schedule icon from the left icon bar of the main window of TrojanHunter Scanner.
31. Set up the Automatic LiveUpdate and enable (optional).
32. Set up the Scheduled Scanner and enable (optional).
Perform a Full Scan
33. From the top icon bar, select Full Scan
- The total scan time will vary based on the number of files being scanned, types of files, number of disks, CPU type, normal CPU loading, etc.
- As the scan progresses, TH scanner will display its findings in the display window.
34. Based on the results of the scan, perform necessary corrective measures.
35. Close TrojanHunter Scanner.
Test TrojanHunter Guard and Scanner
36. It is a good idea to test TrojanHunter using TrojanSimulator.

1. For the Trial version of TrojanHunter V4.5 or later, the user can obtain the latest rulesets from this link:
http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/updating/
The manual download rulesets are updated once per day.
2. Any previous version(s) of TrojanHunter can/should be safely deleted using Windows Explorer. Navigate to the folder(s) of the previous version(s) and remove the folder(s).
3. First installation of TrojanHunter V4.5 or later, Licensed users: You need a new license file which you can obtain at: http://www.misec.net/trojanhunter/licensefile/
4. After 1-May-06 the subscription service becomes effective. Previous users of TrojanHunter will need to purchase a new license by 1-May-06 (See License/Subscription Policy).
Applies to TrojanHunter V5.0 or later.
