hi ppl, i'm new here but i thought that i'd post a couple of tips for the viewing audience. turning off auto complete: ========================== some of you may be annoyed that when you sit at ure pc and type in a form or an address bar that ure pc has remembered the info that you last put in. this can be crucial when filling out forms that are of a private nature. such as online subscriptions and so forth. more than likely the banks all do ssl so it should not be that you run into this problem in places that are secure ie. https:/www.blahblahh. neway if you want to know how to turn it off then i suggest that you read this post and follow the instructions. go to start menu and select control panel. select internet options from the menu. click the 'content' tab click 'auto complete' deselect any check boxes that are in the dialog box and click 'clear forms' and 'clear passwords' while you are at it. click ok and then once more click ok to close out all dialog boxes. when or if you are prompted to turn auto complete on just select no. Program on auto start annoyances: ================================= open regedit in run do not close the registry editer until you have completely finished disabling the program you are trying to stop. note- number 4. illustrates that content advisor can be turned off and how this is done. after the illistration is done i will also demonstrate how to disable the ability to turn it off. what i show will give administrators the ability to restrict access to regediting. win 98-1. and 3. win xp-2., 4. and 5. 1.press ctrl+alt+del brings up the task manager and sometimes you can see the program in the list. if you can, select it, and then click end program. 2.start> run> type: regedit > now that ure in the registry, follow this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Run now that ure in the run folder you need to right click on it. a menu appears that says something like this: collapse new find delete rename export permissions copy key name if you can see this then select export a dialog box opens that allows you to save this registry file to anywhere you want. you need to do this in order to edit the registry correctly. first: in the drop down save in box select desktop second: in the file name field tye the Run which is the name of the folder that ure editing. third: click save now you should have a file on ure desktop that's called Run.reg. if you do then right click on it and from the appearing menu click edit. from here you edit the registry file. find the program that you want to stop or send me a copy of the file and i'll edit it for you. can't promise that the newsance is found here but it should be. if it is and you can identify it, then go ahead and remove the line of code assosiated with this program, click save and then update the registry by executing Run.reg from the desktop. all done 3.it is possible that you didn't find what you were looking for. if this is the case you can look in two other places that i know of. i think that this first one is only applicaple for machines earlier than win xp to do: navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion \Policies\Ratings all you need to do is to repeat the instructions from above. 4.this will delete the pwd and all the settings stored into the content advisor program. don't worry, this won't damage the program. to do: navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies \Ratings you'll need to save a copy of this settings first if you want to disable this feature only temporarirly. to save a copy of it you need to right click on Ratings and select export from the menu. export this file with the name of Ratings to the desktop. now right click on the folder that you used to export the copy you made with and select delete. admins: earlier i said that i would show you how to keep content advisor from being turned off. NOTE-you should treat this as a must for all reg settings that you do not want neone to mess with. to do: right click on the reg folder you used to export the copy you made and select permissions. there are two fields in this dialoge box. the first specifies group and user names. the second gives administrators the ability to specify permissions. select everyone or whatever name belongs to the restricted user. click the full controll/deny check box and notice that both of the permissions for restricted user are now taken away. click ok and now the restricted partie(s) are denied access to the settings you disabled previously. hopefully, if you read all of this, you now know how to keep ppl from editing settings you dont' want them to be able to. 5.start> run> type msconfig click on the startup tab remove the checks from the check boxes belonging to the programs that you don't want to start automatically with windows. click ok
