Diskeeper causing problems to Vista start up

I have been using Diskeeper for some time now and last year loaded the appropriate version onto my laptop installed with Vista Home Premium.  It has worked well for me keeping my hard disk defragmented.  For the past few months I have had an intermittent start up problem.  My laptop would stay at the green loading banner and go no further.  I had to close down by using the on/off button, and then restart.  It would then restart all right.  I have tried many ways of correcting this fault and a few weeks ago I checked the Errors Log and found that Diskeeper was appearing time after time.  I disabled Diskeeper and, up to now, it has stopped this problem.  The problem was completely random and sometimes several weeks passed before it re-appeared.

Any ideas would be much appreciated please.

I seemed to have baffled you all.  I have disabled Diskeeper for the moment and all seems well!!  Will leave it for another week and then enable it again and see what happens.

Have you tried running CHKDSK /r /f to check your hard drive for errors?  The link below gives you info on this utility.

You may some bad sectors that Diskeeper is randomly running into.

Thanks siliconman01.  I have run chdsk /r /f and the following message appeared: Deleting corrupt attribute record (128, " ") from file record segment 28.

Perhaps this was the problem!

It could very well be.  Re-instate Diskeeper and see if the original problem is no longer present.  Smiley

Okay, I re-instated Diskeeper and the problem returned twice last evening.  Have disabled it again and, up to now, all is all right.

Can you tell me if there is a way of contacting Diskeeper, or is there a Forum for them.  I can only find a means of contacting their Tech Support by having to pay for their advice!!

I really do not know anything about Diskeeper.  I googled for Diskeeper forum and Diskeeper support and didn't find anything encouraging as far as active support.

Please take a look at this link.  Maybe you need to either turn off boot time defrag or turn off CHKDSK.

I have found the solution to my start up problem.  It was not the fault of Diskeeper!  After much research I found that MS had knowledge of the problem and had a Hotfix for it (KB960723)

For your, and other readers information, the link to find it is:  http://itsvista.com/2008/12/kb960723
