Diskeeper questions

Hello everyone,

I’m hoping a forum member or two may have some thoughts on this issue.  Here’s my story:  A while ago, I installed an application called Diskeeper—a replacement for the Windows disk defragmenter.  Soon after, my firewall alerted me that “dkservice.exe” was seeking an outbound communication.  Not knowing what that was, I didn’t allow it.

After daily messages from my firewall, I found that “dkservice.exe” resides in Diskeeper’s folder in program files.  I then placed “dkservice.exe” in my firewall’s blocked applications list to stop the annoying alerts.

I emailed the company’s technical services explaining what was happening and was told, “…please allow Diskeeper thru your firewall. Diskeeper listens to traffic and your firewall will think that it may be an intruder and block it, thus preventing Diskeeper from running.”

I replied to this message, saying Diskeeper seemed to be working just fine while “dkservice.exe” was blocked and could it be explained why an outbound connection was needed and what Diskeeper was doing when it wanted to “listen to traffic.”

No response was received to these questions.  Couple of days ago, I receive a cheery message from Diskeeper’s technician asking if everything was fine now.  I sent copies of the previous messages and posed the same questions again.  Still, no reply from their end.

A scan by TrojanHunter plus three separate spyware removal tools found nothing suspicious.  But I still wonder why Diskeeper hasn’t given me answers to my questions. What’s the connection between “listening to traffic” and defraging a hard disk?  Does anyone have any ideas on this?

Welcome to the forum, Mike  Cheesy

Does Diskeeper have a "check for updates/upgrades" option to automatically download changes to itself?  If so, it is probably needing access for doing so.  I'm not a Diskeeper user so others hopefully will jump in on your question.

---------------------------------------
Diskeeper 9.0 has been redesigned since version 8.0 and operates using different communications methods that have been proven to be more reliable than the previous methods. There are some configuration steps that may be needed prior to running the new Diskeeper 9.0.

Standalone [non-networked] machines running Professional or Home Edition:

In some cases, if you have firewall software installed on your standalone system, it may display messages and indications that Diskeeper is attempting to make communications on your system whether you’re using the client editions or the Administrator Edition. Not to worry, this is a normal indication that Diskeeper is successfully attempting communications. Diskeeper does not use the internet to communicate but uses its own communication among its components to function.

It is perfectly okay for you to allow or block the messages or communications warnings that the firewall may generate. Diskeeper will continue to function either way. If it does not, please contact our support team

Networked machines running Professional or Server Editions -

In order for systems running firewalls to be able to utilize communications between the Administrator Edition and the Professional or Server editions the following components need to added to your firewall:

Diskeeper 9.0 Professional and Server Editions (for systems that are clients)-

The following items or ports need to be enabled on your firewall if it is installed on the client machine:

• Port number 139 and Port number 445 - File and Print Sharing
• Port number 31038 and port number 31058.

Diskeeper 9.0 Administrator Edition (for system that is host/server)-

1. Port number 139 and Port number 445- File and Print Sharing
2. Port number 31029, Port number 31037, Port number 31036, and Port number 31056.

Additional components of Diskeeper that may need to be added to your firewall’s “White-list/exceptions list”:

 i.
 Diskeeper Administrator - C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper Administrator\DKAdmin.exe

ii.
 DiskeeperAdminService- C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper Administrator\DKSAdmin.exe

iii.
 Microsoft Management Console- mmc.exe C:\Windows\system32\mmc.exe

iv.
 Executive Software Remote Installation- esri.exe
C:\Program Files\Executive Software\Diskeeper Administrator\RemoteInstall\esri.exe

If you are running Diskeeper Administrator and Diskeeper Professional or Server Editions on the same machine, please run both configuration steps mentioned above.

If you are running Windows XP Service Pack 2, please exit out of this document and go into the Service Pack 2 section of our website for more information.

After properly configuring your network and firewall settings and you are still running into trouble using Diskeeper, please check with your firewall provider to see what other actions can be taken to use 3rd party software in conjunction with the firewall.
