NIS 2006 Info

For those who might be NIS users (me included), I upgraded my XP-SP2 HE system from NIS 2005 to NIS 2006 this week. I thought I'd provide a bit of info concerning the upgrade.  The canned info about NIS 2006 can be read from:
http://www.symantecstore.com/dr/sat1/ec_Main.Entry17C?SID=49997&SP=1 0023&CID=197018&PID=754925&PN=1&V1=754925&CUR=840&DSP=&PGRP=0&CACHE_ID=197018

NOTE:  NIS 2006 only works on XP and 2000

-  Although Symantec says 2006 can be installed over previous versions, the overinstall does NOT save user settings nor custom rules, nor custom webpage entries for Ad blocking, etc.  These all have to be rebuilt by the user after the installation.  My recommendation is to clean install 2006...where clean install means registry cleaning as well as well a transient file removals.

-  I recommend that all other programs be shut down.  Any security protection programs such as ProcessGuard, Regdefend, OnlineArmor should be totally deactivated.  This will prevent interference and blocks that can/will occur as the installation progresses.

-  Plan for at least 2-3 hours to go through the installation and user setups...more if there are many user customizations.  It took me right at 5 hours because of custom rule re-installations, etc.

-  After the installation/setup/checkout I recommend that a cleanup be done on the registry and also by CCleaner, Window Washer, or equivalent.  There is a lot of trash left over from the installation.

-  Thus far, I have seen no conflicts running NIS 2006 with TrojanHunter V4.2, ProcessGuard V3.15, RegDefend 2.001, Online Armor, AdAware SE Plus V1.06r1, SpySweeper 4.5, CounterSpy 1.5, SpyCop, SpyWareBlaster V3.4, MRU-Blaster, MS Office 2003(Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), MSMoney 2006, Thumbplus 7.0, BounceBack 6.0, SnagIt V7.2.4, NeroSuite V6.6, AOL 9.0 Optimized SE, CryptoSuite V1.1, Adobe Reader V7.0.5, Window Washer V6.0.2.466, CCleaner V1.24.180, Weather Pulse V2.0.5.26 and several other program groups on my system.

-  NIS 2006's user interface is not much different from NIS 2004/5.  There is a new Norton Protection Center that adds some security monitoring tools for XP and NIS 2006.  Some will consider it a bit obtrusive because it does have popups if selected events occur.  However, it does provide additional security features for users.  Under normal conditions, it runs "silently".

-  NIS 2006 incorporates much more spyware detection than previous versions of NIS or NAV.  Symantec's obvious goal is to provide combined protection from most malicious incursions.

-  NIS 2006 provides incremental LiveUpdates daily instead of weekly which in my opinion is a significant enhancement.  These are typically 3-500 kbytes updates.  Running the Intelligent Updater daily at a 9 mbyte download is no longer necessary to maintain current signatures.

-  NIS 2006's Virtual Memory requirements are approximately 81 megabytes with 10 modules + svchost memory resident.

-  My idle CPU utilization varies from 0-8% with the majority of the time being below 4%; therefore, I am not seeing anything that I would characterize as invasive with NIS 2006.

-  A Full System Scan of 4 drives and 1.45 million objects takes 1 hour 52 minutes (no user activity going on).

-  I've reported a couple of insignificant malfunctions.  However, overall this new release appears quite solid.

Just for Info and Reference.  Wink
