Trojan software

I consider myself a semi-advanced computer user.  I've read some reviews on the latest anti-trojan software.  It seems that Trojan Hunter and TDS-3 are the leaders of this industry.  TDS-3 appears to be the most sophisticated, but I am a bit concerned about the complexity as well as the timelyness of their updates.  I would like to hear some suggestions on which protection I should consider from those that have more knowledge on this matter.  Thank you.

Hi Dustin.
I think nearly everyone at some point, ends up in the same dilemma as you – deciding between TDS and Trojan Hunter.
The best advice I can give is to try them both and see which one you prefer. I did exactly that and purchased TH after just a couple of days. It gives excellent protection (on demand scanner and resident memory monitor) and has the fastest file scanner in the business. The updates are regular, and the program is being actively developed. The support is excellent from both Magnus and the forum members, and 99.9% of all problems are quickly sorted. The remaining 0.1% we all contemplate for a week or so!
Don’t be fooled by TH’s wonderfully easy to use GUI in comparison to TDS’s…GUI. TH packs a lot of AT power.
Good luck!

My view would be that a realtime monitor (like THGuard) should be a must as far as Trojans are concerned. In addition I would consider a number of other pieces of overlapping software to provide protection, TH does provide some excellent overlap in terms of its Custom rules. This allows you to create rules for virtually anything. Smiley

I also use a firewall (Outpost Pro), two virus checkers (NAV & GAV) and a number of spyware detectors/stoppers (SS&D, AdAware, SpywareBlaster & SpywareGuard) as protection. There is some overlap between the functionality of these pieces of software however if one fails the other will get it. Or so the theory goes!  Smiley

Anyway that's my tuppence til someone better shows up.

I too, investigated both TDS-3 and TH before settling on TH. System resource use was a major issue on my Win98SE AMD K6-2 400, and so was the attitude of the vendors toward enquiries and support. Even though I am now running a newer, faster box, I still love my TH, and for various reasons am unlikely to ever consider TDS. I am sure that if you try TH, you will like it.

Thank you all for the input.  I will definately take into consideration your advice.  maxqnz if you don't mind me asking, could you be more specific as to why you would not purchase TDS.  You stated, "for various reasons" you would not.  I'm curious as to what those reasons are.

Vendor ethics, bluntly. When trialling it, Wayne Diamond responded to my concerns about resource use by insisting the problem was my underpowered PC, not his software. I subsequently found that many others had noticed TDS's greed for system resources. Wayne also came into these forums once to slag off at TH, and has been quick to run it down in other forums as well. Magnus has not only conducted himself ethically, he also responds well to enquiries and suggestions regarding the product and any problems with it. I did not receive such treatment from Wayne Diamond when trialling TDS.

1. Welcome to the TH Forum, Dustin.

2. You are one (maybe two?) levels above me if you are a "semi-advanced computer user." THAT is why I chose TH, the customer service support is outstanding (both, here at the Forum and, from Magnus personally when necessary). I can personally attest to this, I have experienced it. It is simply a great feeling  for me to know someone is there, or will be there, if I have a problem.

2a. I lucked out, and chose TH about one-and-a-half years ago, when I was even less informed (if possible!) than I am now. There have been 3 or 4 times, especially early on, when I had problems. Magnus personally, via email, assisted me promptly each step of the way till the issue was resolved That kind of personal sevice is almost unheard of nowadays!

2b. I would gladly pay more for the program and the support that is provided. (Sh!!! Be quiet, on that matter. Don't tell anyone I said that!  Grin )

3. ReGen's advice (all) and comments are excellent. Go ahead and try both.

4. I do know of people who have purchased, and regularly use, both TDS and TH. Depends on your internet habits, and security needs.

5. TH is superfast, it is easy to use (even for [almost] computer illiterates, like me), it is CONTINUALLY being tinkered with and improved by Magnus, the rate and size of updates is ongoing, the updates seem to be coming at us at roughly double the rate of six months ago.

6. Here at TH you would be surprised (would you not?) if everyone was NOT hardcore TH fans. However having said that, I genuinely appreciate the open-mindedness of most of the regular Forum users, on most of the topics that are discussed here, especially in regard to other products (often AVs it seems). We all have our own favorites.

That is quite excellent I think. At some boards, it seems to me, the people delight in ripping off each other's heads, and being insulting, and arrogant. Not here, not usually that is: again, a very good "rate" of open discussion, IMHO.

--Thus, though nearly everyone here is a fan of TH most of use (MOST of the time) realize that others have other preferences, all for various reasons. Along these lines, for example, TH and a very few other programs (one or two AVs, for example), seem not to play well together. This is an ongoing discussion here as to why this occurs. We each have our suspicion (opinion) I guess, as to the reasons this sometimes occurs.

--Having said that, one thing I have noticed (comments in this forum) is that Magnus has made, and continues to make, obvious and conscious efforts to ensure TH "plays well" with all other legit software programs.

--Thus, my opinion why TH (sometimes) does not work well with (a few) programs:
1. the other software program has a problem, or
2. it has to do with the unique and particular "mix" of software (OS, maybe) and hardware (cpu or video card or RAM, maybe) that each of us has installed on our systems.
3. Or ? (you are welcome to join the discussion, on this matter).

Hope to see you back here soon.

Once again, I thank you for this information.  I may have been generous in calling myself a "semi-advanced user."  Like most people, I am still in the learning process.  It is testimonies like the one above that really help in the decision making process.  I am definately interested in "keeping the peace" within my system.  And would be interested in knowing if anyone has heard of conflicts with TH and any of the components in my system.  Here is a brief description of what my system consists of:

1.8 GHz AMD Athlon
512 MB DDR 333 MHz RAM
GForce 4  128MB Video card from Visiontek
Sound Blaster Audigy Sound card
Windows XP Pro   OS
Zone Alarm Pro
Norton Anti-Virus 2003 Pro
Ad-Aware 6.0
GoBack
Norton System Works 2003

Dustin,

1. Nice setup!
2. Remember this name (a TH forum member): Randy_Bell
3. Go to the very first page of this forum. Look at the top of the page, it should say: "Mischel Internet Security - Forum - Index."
3a. Then, click on the section that is titled "Trojan Hunter."
3b. Then, look for--and read--BOTH of these "threads," (topics):
--"A laughable problem, but a pain in neck!"
--"NIS and LiveUpdate."

I was a Norton user, now I use NOD32. I like it much better, it uses way less system resources, is easier to use, is much faster, and is easier (and faster) to update. Not to mention it is in the same league as TH: top of the line.  I say this (mainly) because I want you to know, I personally do not use Norton.

However, there are a number of TH fans, and regular forum contributors--Randy_Bell being one of them--who ARE loyal and satifisfied users of Norton.

--Yet, it seems that SOMETIMES, some TH users do experience some kind of difficulty between Norton and TH. The threads I mention should prove VERY useful.  Look especially for posts by Randy, and send him a message. He is very knowledgeable, and likeable, and quick to help (Don't tell him I said that, we don't want to give him a big head, do we?  Wink )

--Other than Randy there are SEVERAL other knowledgeable people who will help you if you make a post in those threads I mentioned. Do it, you will be glad you did.

Finally, my guess is this: looking at your set up (similar to mine, but a bit more advanced GeForce 4, versus a 3 on my machine, for example), I think you will have no problems whatsoever. You have a great (powerful, and FAST) cpu and chipset (I definitely think AMD is superior to Intel), you have plenty of RAM (with DDR no less) and you have a cool very cool, Visiontek graphics card--and more.

After reading those threads, asking a question or two, I am guessing you will want to definitely TRY TH. Having TH would help ensure your system is not only a screamer in terms of speed and all the rest, you will  also rest assured it is a secure and protected screamer!!

I hope that helps.

Walter,
Your feedback is much appreciated.  I did as you asked, except the part about posting.  I didn't feel I should insert my opinion.  Those individuals seem quite knowledeable and I do disagree with some of their opinions about NAV, not to mention some of their comments regarding the customer service staff.  However, they may have their reasons.

I also would like to suggest to you to avoid Visiontek products.  I've gone through hell with them and I don't want others to have a similar experience.  Also, my opinion is that Intel makes a superior product, but I purchased AMD because of the cost/benifit ratio.  I feel that Intel's performance margin isn't worth the premium price.

I will continue to monitor this forum for information and I appreciate your suggestions, comments, and time.

Dustin,

It sounds like you did get an idea of some of the opinions expressed at the Forum. Other than agreement on TH, there is a wide divergence of opinion on almost everything else.

--Thanks for the heads up on Visionteck products!!  I have been playing around with getting another system, and was probably going to buy one with a Visiontek card. I had not heard anything negative, in fact the opposite. However, for the last 6 months or so I have not been visiting any of the tech websites (Anandtech, for example), the ones that usually have some decent and up-to-date info on various hardware.

So, if you don't mind, could you expand a bit on your comment: "I've gone through hell with them and don't want others to have a similar experience."? I would like to know what happened, so I don't get caught up in it, as you said.

Do you think your experience has to do mainly with the GeForce 4? Or, as you seemed to indicate, there is some kind of a problem with all their products? Or, are you referring more to Visiontek's attitude, or policies? (Like customer service, or lack of it, for example?)

--Intel versus AMD, I respect your opinion. The debate between the two fan groups (of the 2 chips) reminds me a bit of the Chevy versus Ford (in the USA) argument.  I guess I like AMD because some of my favorite games do very well with my AMD Athlon...so I like it. Other gamers too, seem to favor AMD--thus, my personal bias in favor of AMD.

--Good luck on your quest for AT info. Feel free to post back here, whenever you want. If you come across any info. you think is worth sharing with the rest of us, do share it...OK?

With regards to Visiontek, I bought the card when it was the hottest thing on the market.  I feel that Radeon topped it with the 9700 Pro, I think that was the card.  I've stopped keeping up to date on video cards, so I have to admit my ignorance as to what is the best now.  However, back to Visiontek.  I had a problem with the cards functionality.  And discovered that there was a defect within the card itself.  Visiontek arranged a RMA(Returned Merchandise Authorization) and I returned the card.  A month passed and I still was without a card.  Finally, after threatening to drive to Illinois where their office was located, I was told the real reason for the delay.  They were having financial problems and were on the verge of bankruptcy.  I was told that they were still going to honor the RMA's.  I don't know what came of the financial issue.  However, after two months I was still without a card.  I ended up making another serious phone call threatening to drive there and I was finanlly put into contact with a manager that said that he would get me a card as quickly as possible.  I was mailed a card overnight.  This surprised me.  The card came in a white box and it had dust one the cooling fan.  It seems to work properly, but I always wonder what that manager did to come up with a card so quickly when I was constantly being told that they didn't have a replacement to give me.
That is why I will never buy another of their products.

Wow. Thanks, Dustin for that info--

What a story, what a hassle! I hate it when things like that happen!  A Visiontek card (no matter what else I might hear) just got crossed off my list of possibilities.

I think you're right about the ATI Radeon Card, it is (or was) the 9700. Of course, between nVidia and ATI it seems to keep going back and forth, as to whose card is hottest at any given moment. Nvidia definitely had the upper hand for a while, especially because their drivers always seemed more up to date, new drivers every 4-6 months. But it seems ATI has been coming back strong again, especially since the 9700.

Something to look into again, carefully, before I lay out any $.

Thanks again.

Well...I've ran into a problem and I'm now faced with a dilema.  I use Norton products (i.e. System Works 2003 and Anti-Virus 2003 Pro).  Basically, after installing a trial version of TH my Norton Live Update wouldn't run unless I actually opened System Works and ran it from there, that wasn't a big deal.  However, when I tried to run the defragmenter that is a part of System Works it wouldn't run, that is a problem.  I've been reading the forum comments that address the conflicts between TH and other softwares.

I understand the member's loyalty to TH and I think that says a lot for the quality of the software.  On the other hand, I like Norton products and I feel compelled to choose between the two.

Unfortunately, I like the setup that I currently have and TH did not detect any trojans on my system, which tells me that after years of using my computer to do what I need it to do my current defense system seems to be working.  I use NAV and Zone Alarm and I have no choice but to conclude that a Trojan defense system is not worth the headache of the conflicts that come with it.

I will continue to monitor this forum as I feel that it's a place where a lot of knowledge resides, not to mention the kindness and willingness to help that the members exhibit.
