Not particularly fast, but here’s a UK Mirror site for down loading the new V6.0 Ad-Aware (Free Version) which was released today:

What's the freeware version like? I haven't got around to installing it yet. I notice there are now three tiers of the app., so I was wondering if the freeware version is any sense crippleware.

The freeware version doesn’t include Ad-Watch which is the equivalent of TH’s Guard. It also won’t let you use certain / any plug-ins. But the file scanner is fully functional.

The plus version gives you the use of Ad-watch and some plug-ins. (Ad-watch monitors what’s coming off the net, blocks sites / pop-ups, monitors the registry for changes and shortly will block cookies.

The pro version has everything the plus version has and also a Process browser and professional plug-ins.

Plug-ins that exist so far include:

Hex dump
Filespecs
LSP Explorer

Don’t believe all the negative posts that some people, for whatever reason, have been submitting about Ad-aware 6. Ad-Aware 6.0 has absolutely no bugs that I’ve noticed. People just need to read the manual first.

Hope that helps.  Smiley

It certainly does, thanks. Reading your post, it sounds as if most of the bells and whistles offered by the not-free versions are features I already have available in either TH or my firewall Outpost. That suggests that I may as well save some dosh and just get the free version. Many thanks

Downloaded and installed both Ad-aware and Spybot along with TH this week. Am considering to spring for the plus version of Ad-aware. All these programs as well as NAV, BlackIce and a Linksys router are working fine with my W98. Am new to computers and realize that one can not have to much protection. The internet is a dangerous jungle.

DaHen,

Sounds like you are off to a good beginning with those different programs. I'm guessing you must have a fast chip (cpu, high MHz) and probably plenty of RAM too, yes?

Welcome to the Forum. Come back often, it is a nice friendly place. I have learned a lot here....

Walter,
This Compaq 7994 w/900MHz is almost three years old. Have maxed out the memory with 512, installed faster burner, USB 2.0 & network card. Resources was being eaten up when I went to Verizon DSL but adding a router took care of that problem.
Now that this machine is well protected, would like to go out and wash & wax the car. But Its five above zero here in Boston, so will pass on that idea.
