any idea if avg and nav will get along together on the same machine?

i've relied upon nav for quite a few years, never been disappointed... but now i'm looking at adding more av protection.

kaspersky gets great reviews.  avg is nearly always mentioned in any list of top av tools (and frankly i think a lot of that can be attributed to its cost).  <g>

i suppose it's easy enough to just install avg and see what the heck happens with nav sitting there, used to being the only game in town.  but i thought it might be smart to begin asking around first.

AVG's always worth a try, especially at the price they charge Grin

The one important - nay, vital - thing to remember about running multiple AVs is to NEVER have more than one doing resident protection ('on-access scanning' is what most would call it). You can try any number as an 'on-demand' scanner, to run when directed, but almost without exception they all argue like hell if trying to scan each file as they run.

Kaspersky is supposed to be good on worms and Trojans too. For some reason, AVG never gets rated highly in the tests that I've seen, so you may be better sticking with Norton (which comes top or near top in all of them), providing you can take the 10-15% resource hit (though that'll only really affect WinME and below, since NT/2K/XP uses different - better - memory management).

thanks for the helpful reply, ian

i have seen others repeat what you say about not trying to run two av's as resident scanners.  i have also seen some dudes using 4 av programs, for a variety of tasks.  i think i will continue to persue this idea of two, but not sure which other one to add.

kaspersky looks great, but i feel i would be giving up a lot if i were to put nav aside in order to let kaspersky be the boss.

i'll keep cogitating on the topic.

meanwhile, i am really happy that i have added a trojan scanner to the security mix.

Four AVs? Blimey! And I thought I was paranoid!!! Two would do fine - if you want to keep NAV (it's good AV protection, so you're okay there), try AVG - it would be interesting to see if they find different things (or at least report them - I don't suppose much will get in past them). Adding TH to the mix covers Trojans better than Kaspersky, so you'll probably not get any benefit buying that AV, unless you were to change from NAV.

I'm happy with AVG, though, despite some lowly estimates of it's performance. That and a good dose of suspicion, allied to common snense about what to download, is probably as good as it needs to be Grin
